Bengaluru: Liquor shops to open for limited hours if lockdown is extended

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SD)

Bengaluru, Apr 7: Amid the rising cases of coronavirus in the country, few state leaders have urged the centre to extend the lockdown period which is bound to end on April 14. Meanwhile, the lockdown also caused shutting down of stores across the nation, one of them being liquor shops. The closure of these shops, however, proved disastrous to the some addicts who have since then resorted to suicide as they are unable to handle the withdrawal symptoms. Now, if the ongoing 21-day lockdown is extended, the Karnataka government is reportedly considering the possibility of keeping the liquor stores open for a limited duration during the day.

Earlier in the week, news from the around the country of miscreants breaking in the liquor shops also surfaced.

According to excise department officials, CM Yediyurappa will take a final call on the proposal to resume the sale of liquor between 10 am to 1 pm if the lockdown goes beyond April 14.

Even before the lockdown was announced on March 24, liquor sale was prohibited in Karnataka three days before the announcement on March 21.

After commercial tax, the excise tax is the second-highest revenue generator for the Karnataka government which has prompted the government to reconsider the ban, reports suggest.

In the year 2019-20, the average revenue collected per month was Rs 1,800 crore. According to the current budget the government was expecting to collect a revenue of Rs 22,700 crore but exceeded the target by Rs 450 crore.

Please at least allow the sale of cigarettes in small shops. Now Gold Flake "small" is selling at Rs 260/- per pack ! Small pan shops can maintain social distancing unlike bars.

When all the shops are opened, like grocerie shops, super markets. Medical shop, even meat shops (chicken, mutton, fish, beef) everything is open, then why is liquor shop closed??

How will liquor shop cause any damage? When you all think liquor shops are going to spread and increase covid19 then technically all the shops are suppose to be closed. Now because of this, the bar owners or Mrp owners are selling the liquor at a high price, ex: 50 drink is sold for 5000rs this is insane, and this is definitely done with the support of the bars owners. Even after government is sealed the bar and Mrp how can they do this. I request the government to track these kind of illegal and greedy people to be punished severely , Am not craving to drink, but it definitely make sense to open the liquor shop. Thank you.

    Dear Sir,
Even Lock-down we are getting all the essential things in the shops but why not for Liquor.
If we get liquor in shops for limited period of hours like we getting veg & other stuffs outside (it will be safe to buy Veg & other stuffs but not alcohol rite so funny), it will help ppls who consume alcohol and also peoples will rest at home and spend time inside. In this case, some peoples used to get liquor from unknown dealers (it may not save to buy) instead of this could provide limited access or home delivery.
Could anyone, please give a valid reason for complete lock-down of liquor.

The Govt. Is confused. Liquor is a main source of revenue for the government. Keeping the outlets closed leads to black marketing and illicit brewing. Open the outlets as usual and keep everyone happy. Alternatively allow home delivery.

please open mrp shops for limited hours and maintain social distancing just like other shops,
what is the logic in keeping mrp shops closed, the govt. is losing revenue,
    the public needs this,
i am scared if they keep it closed for too long, home made liquor will succeed and they will stop buying from mrp shops, govt. will loose revenue,
OR once the shops open, moderate drinkers too will become alcolohics, and lot of damage will take place in soceity and at home.

kindly open mrp shops responsibly and scientifically.

It is pretty well known that most of the deaths due to Alcohol Consumption happen due to drinking at home or at friends places, in private parties held at these places, in college hostels, dormitories. Rather than allow the liquor shops to be open for a limited amount of time., allow the pubs to reopen with a limited number of customers (first come , first served without on-line reservation) so that social distancing is maintained. Let them be open till 11.30 p.m initially (as used to be the case earlier) before extension to 1 am as is the case currently. Also opening pubs will rejuvenate social life . Opening liquor stores will only serve the hardcore alcoholics who don't drink for social reasons

Could you please read an article regarding withdrawal symptoms of alcohol. And do you really want to fill hospitals with patients full of addicts. Addicted can be treated later and covid patients need hospitals and Wards. If someone ask you to eat only rotis and leave rice till lockdown. It's same thing

While most are social drinkers and some for relaxation after a days hard work. Hardcores may be less than 5%. Who made them? Our own government for the greed of easy revenue and left them high and dry. There are lot of other businesses and restaurants related to alcohol. Every budget poor peoples money is robbed by hike in alcohol price. I guess same like groceries, liquor shops too should be open for at least 3 hours a day. For many aged people its a medicine for moderate ailment, pain and a source of good sleep!

I think liquor shops should be open for limited hours maintaining social distance in watch of Police. People here being over smart that it should stay closed don't know what is withdrawal symptoms and how they affect worstly particularly in this lockdown period. In India, mental diseases like hypertension and all are never been given importance. So many people are roaming out in search of liquor in nights and putting themselves in danger and other too. Best is if they get alcohol they will stay home calmly

Heavy rush will be there as all drunks will rush to buy. Also social distancing needs to be maintained which looks difficult at this time as crowds will be too high. Cops need to monitor

What a stupid logic. Already the administration are struggling to contain covid patients and u r advising addicts to be admitted. It is very easy to sit in our houses to give free a advise without knowing the ground reality.
