Mangaluru: Closure of establishments not resulting in less water consumption

Mangaluru, Apr 4: Even though the entire city is under lockdown, construction and other industries have stopped functioning, there has not been any decline in water consumption as evidenced by the dwindling water level at Thumbe vented dam.

Currently, Thumbe dam holds 5.17 metres of water as on Friday as against maximum level of six metres. On this day last year, the water level in the dam was 5.4 metres but then the dam had received water from AMR dame once. Considering this, the city corporation officials might be forced to get water from AMR dam to augment water level.

The officials plan to get water from AMR dam once the water level at the dam reaches 4.3 metres so as to maintain the level of six metres, which the officials hope, would be sufficient to see the city through the summer. This might happen in about ten days’ time from now.

Even though hotels and many establishments in the city have been closed, the water use has not come down. It is felt that domestic water consumption would have gone up as people are now staying inside their homes.

    Washing hands now and then wont effect the water level. Its a lame excuse. May be some other factor like hot weather etc.

    Please wait. We will have water24*7*365 in next few years. Plan is still in implementation stage.

    Many students went house to house to inform this matter . They came with files , Maps etc and were carefully calculating and informed all in my area.

    I have to wait only 2 years. Thereafter 24*7*365.

    Ahmedabad in Gujarat usually gets a total of 12 inches of rain for a population of 80 lakhs,but no water shortage even before Narmada dam was constructed. Mangalore has 120 inches for population of 6 lakhs and still there is water shortage .The solution is radial or "French wells", BTW Mangalore has a luxury of 2 rivers also.

    THIS IS THE RESULT OF WASHING HANDS ONCE EVERY 20MINUTES WITH TAPS FULLY ON!!

    AS REPEATEDLY POINTED EARLIER, WE ARE IN FOR AN ACUTE WATER SHORTAGE IN THE PEAK OF SUMMER; ALREADY OPEN WELLS ARE ON THE VERGE OF DRYING DUE TO LOWERING OF GROUND WATER LEVEL & INTENSE HEAT!!

    THIS WILL ADD TO THE CORONA WOES!

    to solve drinking water problem in mangalore/udupi concerned Authority must
    look into have seawater desalination plant at Mangalore same like in Gulf Countries have. This desalination sea water must be supplied to buildings (construction sites) and manufacturing units at mangalore through separate pipe line. this sea desalination water water can be used for toilet, washing utensils, washing cloths, shower etc. well water, borewell water and Thumbe vented dam water only
    to be allowed to use for drinking.

    Consider the leakage in piping as they are very old.
    This is one of the major reason I think.

    The tumbe dam capacity is increased to 7 metres long time
    ago. However water is stored upto 6 meters only. Additional
    one metre cannot be stored as GOK has no money to pay
    compensation for the landowners whose land gets submerged.
    However Mr.Yediyoorappa has all the money to provide
    1500 crores to yettinahole project whereas 175 crores is all
    that is needed for Mangalore water project. When 1500 crores
    was allocated to yettinahole and not a pittance to tumbe our
    honourable took time to applaud the CM.

    Water is getting evaporated due to the extreme heat... people will use the same water like in the past.... otherwise definitely with the closures of so many establishments water should have been there. Dont simply blame people....

    Hypothetically, Mangluru population (50% of 5.5 lacs) washing hands every 20 minutes with taps fully open (approximately 2 minutes) while they lather each section of their hands, calculate the water usage! Moreover, somebody was recommending that a person should have a full body bath & out his clothes for washing each time he goes out of the house, which many might have blindly followed due to fear of CORONA! Now you just do a tough math & see the excessive water usage!

    What is applicable to advanced countries cannot be followed blindly in India considering our burgeoning water population & stress on the potable water supply! If you don't consider all factors objectively, this is the end result; otherwise, it's impossible that, with such a big lockdown of water draining industries we have such a situation!!

    People doesnt have sense and not learnt the lesson ! Future generation will suffer from the present KARMA made by the people ! Even people should learn how to minimize the water consumption ! for instance shaving time the tap is open till the shaving ends which takes at least 10 minutes and you count on how many ltrs of water is wasted for nothing !!

    Consumption of water cannot be quantified by the water level ar Thumbe. Since the past few days there is i tense heat, which is partially responsible for drop in the water level. Meter reading is the most accurate way to measure consumption. Instead of blaming the citizens,L the MCC should inspect where pilferage is going on.

    Problem here is people working from home. Many residents are at home, washing of hands and etc. In fact there should be a lot of water saved since hotels, restaurants are closed. PG accommodations and hostels are closed. Construction closed.
