Mangaluru, Apr 2: Following lockdown enforced across the state and nation, the government made arrangements for stranded workers and homeless. Similarly, the district administration here, took to shift as many as 320 underprivileged people to a hostel near Nanthoor. However, the people at the hostel complained that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) supplied them rotten food to eat.
One of the residents at the hostel, a migrant coolie worker identified as Manjunath said, "We are being given the same food in the morning, evening and night. The food that was served for dinner was completely rotten."
Manjunath also lamented that they were given undercooked rice which could likely cause health issues. "Nearly 300 food packets were wasted because the content was rotten. Now we are in a situation where cannot go back to our homes. Earlier, we used to earn around different places for our daily bread. Now we are forbidden to go outside because we may die of coronavirus. But being inside here, we will surely die because of stale food.
"We have approached the officials with our grievances. However, no one is paying any heed to our problems. Last night, over 320 of us did not have dinner because what we were given was nothing but rotten food. We do not have any problem with staying here but the food that is supplied to us is spoiled. We are unhappy as we are being given the same food three times a day. The packed rotten food is placed near the hostel gate and it is, unfortunately, all a waste," he said.
