Bengaluru, Mar 26: Indira Canteen, a popular initiative undertaken by the previous coalition government in the state headed by the Congress, had been shut two days back because of heavy rush and concerns about the spread of coronavirus infection.

The government has begun to serve free food through Indira Canteens with effect from Thursday March 26 morning again. Head of Cheftalk Food and Hospitality Services, Govind Poojary, said that Indira Canteens, which were closed down on account of coronavirus concerns, have been reopened. "In view of lockdown, free food supply has been ordered. Therefore alternative arrangement for lunch has been made," he stated.

Indira Canteens used to serve breakfast in the morning, and lunch and dinner in the afternoon and evening. On all these three occasions, 70,000 customers were served. But with effect from Thursday, 11,000 rice bhath and Pulao are being served all the three times. Along with Rice Bhath, chutney is served while gravy is provided with Pulao.

As many as 200 packets of food are being distributed in each of the 33 wards of the city. Breakfast is served at 8 am, lunch at 12.30 pm and dinner at 7.30 pm in select Indira Canteens.
