Mangaluru: Tulu in queue among languages awaiting inclusion in 8th schedule

Mangaluru, Mar 17: Minister of Kannada and Culture C T Ravi has assured Mangaluru South MLA Vedvyasa Kamath on taking steps to include Tulu in the eighth schedule of the constitution.

Responding to the MLA’s plea, C T Ravi said that currently there are 22 languages in the eighth schedule and 38 languages are in queue to be included in eighth schedule. Of these, Tulu is the 38th language in the queue. Languages such as Kodava, Banjara of Karnataka are also waiting inclusion in the 8th schedule, he said.

“After reviewing the report by Sithakantha Mahapatra Committee, an inter-departmental committee was formed. The department will review and take a decision on the matter,” he added.

“I have written a letter to the Union Government to include Tulu language in the eighth schedule. When I visit Delhi, I will represent the matter to the Central Minister. After the language is included in the eighth schedule, it will become a state language,” he said.
