Udupi: St Mary Island advances in sophisticated adventure sports

Udupi, Mar 13: Slack Mitra team in association with Malpe Development Committee on Friday March 13 rigged the city's first waterline. The event was attended by Preeti Gehlot, CEO, zilla panchayat, here and Chandrashekar, assistant director of the Tourism Department who also tried the sport.

St Mary Island is being promoted as a geological marvel and is an upcoming adventure sports destination.

St Mary Island split off from Madagascar during the time of Pangea. This island is one of the geological monuments of the country. Filled with volcanic basalt rock columns, St Mary Island is a geological treasure trove as well as a hub for island biodiversity and ecology.



The crew:
1. Navin Devnani Torres (27): Owner at 'Slack Mitra, India's first and very own slackline equipment retailer and manufacturer.
2. Adhwaith Manohar (31yrs): One of the first five highliners in India and part of the O G Slackline crew.
3. Kshitij Mittal (32): Has been instrumental in creating adventure sport events all across the country. Highlining and slacklining is his expression of balance.
4. Vinay Tataria (28yrs): He aims to 'send epic highlines' to raise awareness for important existing issues.

What is slacklining?

Born out of climbing, slacklining is the sport of tying a flat rope between two anchors and walking/doing tricks on it to find some balance.
Set on water, the line becomes a waterline and between mountains it becomes highlines.

Slacklining is one of the most up and coming adventure sports internationally and is growing very fast in India.
