Mangalore, Sep 18: Under the aegis of Billawara Union, Billavara Mahila Sangha and Narayanaguru Group of Educational Institutions, Kudroli here, the 155th birth anniversary of Brahmasri Narayana Guru was celebrated in a grand way recently.
District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar inaugurated the function. He appreciated the Narayanaguru Group of Educational Institutions for endeavouring to create awareness among the masses through spreading education. "Because of the awareness so created among the backward classes, at present, they have been able to identify themselves with the mainstream of the society. Brahmasri Narayana Guru had provided inspiration for such activities," he noted. MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, who participated as the chief guest, lamented the fact that in spite of experiencing development in leaps and bounds in the recent past, the society has not yet been able to completely get rid of the practice of untouchability.
Besant College lecturer Meenakshi Ramachandra read out the message of the Guru. Akhila Bharatha Billawara Union president Navinchandra D Suvarna, who presided over the function, pledged to put in additional efforts for the upliftment of Billawas in the coming days. On this occasion, The Late Damodara R Suvarna Memorial Scholarships were distributed to the students. Billava Mahila Sangha president Sumalata N Suvarna, Akhila Bharatha Billawara Union vice-president K Lokanath and Narayanaguru College principal Vasant Kumar were present at the dais.
Narayanaguru College lecturer Keshav Bangera presented the programme. Sudhir Kumar welcomed, while Shakila Raj proposed vote of thanks.
