Noida, Jan 12: In a tragic incident, two young men lost their lives due to suffocation in a rented room in Noida’s Sector 70, Uttar Pradesh. The fatalities occurred after a pot of chhole (chickpeas) left cooking on a gas stove overnight filled the poorly ventilated room with smoke.
The victims, identified as Upendra (22) and Shivam (23), ran a food cart selling chhole kulche and bhatura in the area. They lived together in a small, cramped room in Basai village, which had inadequate ventilation.
Neighbors became concerned early Saturday morning upon noticing smoke emanating from the men’s room. After breaking down the door, they found both men unconscious. The victims were rushed to the district hospital in Sector 39, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the men had left the chhole cooking on a stove before going to sleep. The stove burned throughout the night, causing the food to burn and emit thick smoke that filled the room.
“A lack of ventilation allowed smoke and carbon monoxide to accumulate, likely leading to suffocation,” a Noida Police official stated.
The bodies were sent for autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death, though authorities noted no external injuries. “The post-mortem will provide further clarity, but initial findings indicate that smoke inhalation and suffocation were responsible,” added the police.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of caution while using cooking appliances, particularly in confined and poorly ventilated spaces.
