Udupi, Sep 11: The ‘International Year of Astronomy’ was celebrated in Milagres College in association with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. Dr S Chatterji from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, was the resource person.
Principal Fr Fred Mascarenhas presided. Dr Gerald Pinto, convener of the programme, welcomed the gathering and explained the importance of the International Year of Astronomy which marks the 400 years of discovery of the telescope by Galileo.
Dr Chatterji explained the different milestones in astronomy starting with the discovery of the telescope, Keplers Laws, and the contribution of Newton, Meghanth Saha, and Dr S Chandrashekar. He said that astrology is not a science and the only two heavenly bodies that affect us are the sun and the moon while the stars have no effect on us.
Prof Archana Dabade, convener of association, was on the dais.
