Udupi, Sep 10: A workshop was held to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, at IMA Bhavan, Brahmagiri here on Thursday September 10. It was jointly organized by Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Doddanagudde, district health and family welfare department in association with district hospital under National Rural Health Campaign.
Speaking after inaugurating the workshop, district health officer Dr Ramachandra Bayari said that maximum number of suicide cases is being reported from Kerala in the nation while there has been a steady rise in suicide cases reported in the coastal district, owing to social, economic and cultural causes. A total of 27 people committed suicide for every 1 lac people in the district here, as per the sources provided by police department during 2007, said.
Bayari added that union government has organized mental health camps in 13 district of Karnataka including Udupi. The state has been laying its due importance to diabetic and cardiac cases that are on the rise in the recent past, besides the contagious diseases, he said and urged the state administration, to organize more programmes to avoid rising suicide cases in the entire state.
Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital director Dr P V Bhandary presided. IMA Charitable Trust director Dr V L Nayak and district project officer for National Rural Health Campaign Dr Nagabhushan were the chief guests.
