Bidar: Two Farmers commit Suicide

Bidar, Aug 10: Distressed by the failure of crops and overwhelmed by the burden of liabilities, two farmers from the district committed suicide on Sunday August 9.

Bhandrappa Sangram (50) committed suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree located in a field in the outskirts of Yadalapur village in the district by using the cloth he was wearing. He had three acres of fields and had taken loans from a bank and some individuals for raising sugarcane crop besides conducting marriage ceremonies of his children. A case has been registered in Bidar rural police station in this connection.

Tulsiram Rajaba Manaji (65) from Vilaspur village consumed insecticide to end his life, when none of the family members were present at home. He was later taken to a hospital but could not be revived. He too had heavy burden of loans and the crops he tried to raise, had withered. A case was registered in Janawada police station in this respect.

    Very sad story of our farmers specially from Karnataka. Our Leaders promise a lot like loan waivers to farmers, subsidised manure etc. This year because of draught fate of our farmers is pethatic. Over and above Bankers are chasing them for repayment of loan. Where they can go? Who will come to their rescue? Feel sorry for these two farmers & their families.

    Ms Leena and Jawahir. Noted your comments and thoughts. As long as there is rampant corruption in our system, no such waivers or any loans would reach the actual needy and it all will be documented in the names of poor farmers and pocketed by the bureaucrats and politician.

    This is sad reality of our democracy. Even if one million farmers committ mass suicide, the government will just show lip sympathy and after some time it will be the same as usual. The best way is to provide insurance to the crops by the government at a nominal subsidised price and if crop fails they will get the compensation directly from the insurance firms.

    Very sad news. The concerned Government should help the farmers, since this year farmers face lot of problems due to poor monsoon. An appropriate action plan by government/or conerned societies will help these farmers and ultimately it is a help for India.

    What a sad incident, this is the failure of our govt to provide the farmers with proper loans and waive off them if there is a failure of crops. Farming is the backbone of India there should be some co-operative societies formed to look after the interests of the farmer''s.
