Mangaluru, Oct 29: An international symposium on rare genetic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes was recently organized by Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research at Nitte University.

The symposium was part of a three-year International Research Networking Project awarded to Dr Anirban Chakraborty, deputy director, NUCSER and Dr Anne de Paepe, Ghent University, Belgium. It is funded by the department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India and Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO).

The symposium was inaugurated by Sanjeev K Varshney, head, International Bilateral Cooperation Division, department of Science and Technology, Government of India. In his address, Varshney emphasized on the need for such bilateral projects and their role in long-term and sustainable collaborations between participating universities.
Pro-chancellor of Nitte, DU, Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty, pro-vice-chancellor of Nitte DU, Prof Dr M S Moodithaya and other dignitaries of the university were present.
The symposium included talks by eminent scientists from Ghent University Belgium and other premier institutes in the country. It showcased the recent developments in the field of rare genetic and bone marrow disorders highlighting a few important ones including connective tissue disorders, eye disorders, muscle disorders and bone marrow disorders.

The scientific talks included topics linked to genetic tools and techniques aimed towards diagnosis, molecular pathogenesis of these diseases in model systems and their relevance in clinical manifestations.

Over 190 participants including postgraduate students, research scholars, clinicians, scientists from various institutes in and around Mangaluru took part in the symposium.
