Mangaluru, Oct 16: The sixth additional district and sessions court here has found that the charge of raping a lady by a man who doled out promise of marriage has been proved. In all likelihood, the quantum of sentence would be announced on October 17.
The accused, Ajith Shetty (28), resident of Kemral Attur, was working as the driver of a backhoe. The girl got introduced to Ajith Shetty through one of her friends. They soon began to love each other and their relationship continued for about five years. Ajith had promised to marry her, and on the base of this promise, he reportedly raped her at her residence on September 4, 2014. He raped her several times thereafter too, as a result of which she conceived, and gave birth to a male baby on May 29, 2015, in a hospital at Moodbidri.
After the baby was born, Ajith Shetty went missing. On July 22, 2015, the lady filed complaint against Ajith and his parents, who had refused to accept her as their daughter-in-law. Within sometime thereafter, the accused was arrested. The then Bajpe police inspector, T D Nagaraj, had undertaken investigation and filed charge sheet.
The sixth additional district and sessions court judge, Sayeedunnisa, found that the charges against Ajith have been proved. DNA test had proved that Ajith Shetty happens to be the biological father of the baby.
Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta had represented the prosecution in the case.
