Mangaluru: Sunken dredger - Company comes forward to remove oil

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 12: It is learnt that Mercator Ltd from Mumbai, which owns the dredger, Tridevi Prem, that sank about 2.5 nautical miles off Panambur coast where it was anchored, has now come forward to clear oil from the sunken dredger to prevent sea pollution from oil leakage.

It is learnt that the company might give the work of removing oil to a foreign firm with which the company is currently in talks. Once technical processes are completed, the team may arrive here to remove oil, it is said.

Steps have been taken to make sure that the sunken dredger does not give rise to oil slick. Close vigil has been kept on the sunken dredger, and two rounds of booms have been installed around the dredger as safety precaution. As of now, the ships coming to New Mangalore Port Trust and going back have not faced any problem from the sunken dredger.

Mercator Ltd already faces police case for negligence. As a measure of abundant precaution, pollution control board and state government have also been informed.
