Tumakuru, Sep 4: A woman, who was living in the city under a tree along with her son was killed by street dogs which tore her into pieces, dragged her around for over two hours, and ate most parts of her body. The incident happened a few days back, but efforts were made to conceal the incident, it is said.
The victim of the stray dog menace was living at D M Palya in ward No. 1 of the city. Jayamma, the woman in question, was living in a shed. After her husband's death, she had left the shed and started to live under a tree nearby along with her only son Sjay (9), since the last some days. As she was living in the open and exposed to vagaries of climate, she had fallen ill. As no one looked her after, she was lying motionless out of weakness.
Street dogs noticed her and attacked her at night. They devoured her head, and limbs. Her son, Ajay, who reached the spot sometime later, watched as his mother was mercilessly eaten up the canines, feeling helpless. He informed people living nearby about the incident.
After the incident was brought to the notice of the police of the town station here, they came there, but by then, over 75 percent of her body had been consumed by the dogs. They collected the bits and pieces remaining, took the remains to a hospital, and burnt the body. It is said that the police in their report washed their hands off by recording it as death from some disease. Even though a complaint was filed about the incident, neither the local people's representatives nor the district administration did anything in the matter, it is said.
CPI district secretary Gireesh, held officials of the entire district responsible for the incident and said it was shameless. Human rights activist Siddalinge Gowda termed it as a blot on the bureaucracy of the entire district.
