Kundapur, Aug 31: A case of harassment for dowry towards a woman married eight months ago has been registered in Kundapur police station.

Noor Jahan (25), resident of Jainabi Manzil, Macca Colony, Venkatapura village in Bhatkal had married Riaz alias Abdul Ameer, in the house of Hamza, Ashok Nagar, Moodu Gopady, Vakwady village in Kundapur on December 23, 2018.

Jahan was in the house of husband after her marriage. Meanwhile her husband Riaz alias Abdul Ameer, father-in-law Hamza, mother in law Balkis, sisters-in-law Jameela and Shabana have been allegedly harassing Noor Jahan asking her to bring cash and gold saying that she did not bring dowry during her wedding. Jahan in her complaint to Kundapur police has stated that all of them hurled expletives at her, pushed her to the wall holding the crest of her hair, slapped and kicked her.

Noor Jahan held a press conference in Kundapur press club on August 29 alleging torture by her husband and in-laws for dowry. “I am the third wife for Hamza. The other two wives have deserted Hamza due to dowry harassment. One of them also has a child. My in-laws assaulted me day before yesterday also. They kicked me and hit me with a stick. I ran out as I was unable to bear the torture. People in the neighbourhood who saw my condition informed my family. I have taken treatment as in-patient at Kundapur government hospital after the assault,” she said.

She demanded that her husband and in laws should be punished. “The society should know the misdeeds of Hamza. Other girls should not be cheated by him. I am prepared to live with him even now. But he should be punished for his fault. Society should see it,” she said.

Yakub, the father of Noor Jahan said that he is a fisherman. “I have four daughters and a son. I knew before the marriage of Noor Jahan that it is the third wedding. But I did not know that other two girls have deserted him because of dowry harassment. We have already lodged a police complaint and spoken to SP and DySP. We are confident of getting justice,” he said.
