Mangaluru: Robbery at Modankap - Two get seven years RI

Mangaluru, Aug 28: Through a judgement passed on Tuesday August 27 the chief district and sessions court here awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each to two persons, after finding them guilty in a case of robbery filed against them. The said robbery had happened last year at Modankap near B C Road.

Praveen K G (32) from Beloor in Hosanagar taluk of Shivamogga district, and Sanjay alias Sanju (32) from Jodumala in Virajpet were the ones who were awarded RI by the court.

Praveen and Sanjay had barged into the house belonging to Janardhana Holla, a retired bank employee, at Modankap, on the night of August 8, 2018. They reportedly had threatened Holla to hand over a golden chain weighing 26.5 grams he was wearing around his neck. When Holla raised an alarm, they hit his head and neck with a sharp weapon and forcibly robbed the said gold chain worn by Holla. The police, during their probe, had arrested the duo and confiscated the robbed gold chain.

Judge of the chief district and sessions court, Kadlur Satyanarayanacharya, came to the conclusion that the charges against the two have been proved. He handed down one year's simple imprisonment for trespass, seven years rigorous imprisonment for robbing the gold chain, and seven years rigorous imprisonment for attacking the person and inflicting serious injuries. The court also imposed fine of Rs 10,000 each on them and ordered them to undergo six months of prison term in case of non-payment.

The judge said that these sentences will run concurrently. 13 witnesses were examined in the case. Public prosecutors Pushparaj Adyantaya and Raju Poojary Bannadi had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
