Bengaluru, Jul 30: Former CM Siddaramaiah has opined that BJP has cancelled the Tipu Jayanti celebration because of their enmity on the minority community.
Speaking to the reporters in the city, the former CM said, "Cancellation of Tipu Jayanti is a severe crime. Tipu is a king not limited to the minority community. He was the great patriot who fought with the British as a king of Mysore. He was the one who laid foundation for the construction of Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam."
"Tipu had contributed a lot for Industrial, agricultural and commercial development of Mysore area. So we decided to celebrate his birthday during our regime. Excepting this, we did not have any other motive. The cancellation of Tipu Jayanti is a serious crime. This shows the anti-minority policy of the government. I vehemently object to this," said Siddaramaiah.
Tipu Jayanti celebrations were started by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government on November 10, 2016. The same was continued by the coalition government-led by H D Kumaraswamy.
BJP had promised in its 2018 assembly election manifesto of cancelling the Tipu Jayanti celebration if they assume power in the state.
