Mangaluru, Jul 29: The district administration of Dakshina Kannada district has decided to hold 'Dengue Drive Day' on every Sunday of the month throughout the district.
The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and the district administration had already decided to hold this drive in every house of the corporation limits on Sunday, July 28. Now the programme is extended to all parts of the district for some months to come.
Mosquitoes are the reason for malaria and dengue. If the larvae produced by the eggs of the mosquitoes are destroyed immediately, the outbreak of malaria and dengue can be controlled effectively. The larvae gets produced when the mosquitoes lay eggs in the water that is stagnant. So it is decided to conduct the Dengue Drive Day by clearing the stagnant water in coconut shells, buckets, plastic containers, flower pots or any other area where the water is not flowing.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sasikanth Senthil inaugurated the drive from his residence on Sunday, July 28. Zilla panchayat CEO Dr R Selvamani, district health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao, assistant commissioner of MCC Gayathri Nayak and others were present on the occasion. The larvae was traced and destroyed in the zilla panchayat building and the residential complex nearby. Signature collection campaign against dengue was also held in important malls in the city. Various organizations of the district have also joined their hands along with the district administration in this drive. The Dengue Drive Day programme is held in all the taluks of the districts also.
Dr R Selvamani, zilla panchayat CEO, said, "Cleanliness needs to be maintained in all the government offices and residential complexes of the district. A circular is sent to celebrate Dengue Drive Day on every Sunday."
Sasikanth Senthil, DC, said, "As the weather in the district is wavering between rain and heat, incidents of contagious epidemic are increasing. It is always better to prevent the production of mosquitoes to control the dengue epidemic. The public has to join hands with the district administration in this drive."
27 people got admitted to various hospitals in the districts on Sunday for symptoms of fever. But dengue fever is not confirmed among these people according to the information shared by officers of health department.
A meeting of the principals and headmasters and headmistresses of colleges and schools is called on Monday, July 29 at 10 am at the Town Hall in the city in order to discuss the implementation of dengue control campaign in schools and colleges.
