Colombo, May 12: The Tamil Tiger rebels say the government shelled a makeshift hospital treating the wounded inside Sri Lanka's war zone in an attack that killed 47 people.
Rebel spokesman Seevaratnam Puleedevan said the shell hit the hospital Tuesday morning.
A health official reached by telephone confirmed the attack on the admissions ward of the hospital and said a further 56 people were wounded. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The government has denied reports that it is shelling the war zone.
