Udupi, Jun 13: The 'World Day Against Child Labour’ was observed at Atal Bihari Vajpayee hall in Rajathadri on Wednesday, June 12. The programme was jointly organised by Udupi District Administration, District Legal Services Authority, Udupi Labour Department, District Child Labour Planning Society, Bar Association and Government Industrial Training Institute, Udupi.

In his inaugural address, Udupi District Legal Services Authority president and district and sessions judge C M Joshi stressed on eradicating the social evil and getting every child compulsorily educated.

“Even after creating awareness since many years, cases of child labour are still reported. It is like an evil that is stuck to this society. Laws must be implemented. We have to kill this evil system before it spreads. But it might take decades to eradicate this evil completely from the society. There is a need to strengthen the child labourers and make them join the portals of school,” he said.

“There are many reasons, child labour is repeatedly reported. It may be financial difficulties or lack of basic amenities and infrastructure. It is our responsibility of eradicating child labour in India,” he stressed.

“A strict system should be put in place where people who are making children work are reported and punished. Laws of the nation are meant for us and it will help in the betterment of the society. Everyone should work towards making India a Child Labour free country,” said Joshi.

“No child should be deprived of education. Let them grow to become good citizens. People must bring back child labourers into the mainstream. An individual should have primary knowledge on laws,” session court judge said.

Additional district commissioner Vidya Kumari said, “if child labour is still in practice, it is shameful and inhuman. Let us ensure that children are not used in work places, whether it is domestic or in factories. Let’s give new life to them.”

Sessions judge C M Joshi stressed on eradicating the social evil [of child labour] and getting every child compulsorily educated.

The judge, no doubt, is speaking from the benefit of having a full stomach.

There are many very poor families who do not get enough food to eat. Hence the issue of child labour.

Instead of calling child labour a social evil, the judge and others need to demand from the Government/s a social safety net for the very poor families. This will help eliminate child labour.

And compulsorily educated? That amazes me. A child has human rights too. What if the child is not interested in going to school?
