Udupi, Nov 16: In a major operation by the Lokayukta, the deputy director of Udupi treasury, Ravikumar, and his assistant Raghavendra were caught red-handed while accepting a bribe on Saturday.

The incident came to light when retired teacher Hitendra Bhandari, who had been struggling for five months to receive his pension, filed a complaint with the Lokayukta. According to the complaint, Ravikumar and Raghavendra had been harassing him and demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 to release his pension funds.

Acting on the complaint, a team led by Udupi in-charge Lokayukta DySP Manjunath, along with Mangaluru Lokayukta PI P Suresh and K N Chandrashekhar, conducted a sting operation. The officials apprehended Ravikumar and Raghavendra while they were accepting the bribe.

The operation involved Lokayukta personnel, including Nagaraj, Satish, Prasanna, Ramesh, Suraj, Sudheer, Raghavendra, Pushpalatha, and Mallika. The accused were taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.

He is one of the honest officers and was in his last month of retirement. He was hated by everyone for doing his duty with honesty and integrity and was threatened when he moved here. This was planned either to take revenge to spoil his name or to extort or to stop all his retirement benefits. If he were to take bribe, would he take such a small amount that too in his office? There are so many big fishes and why would lokayukta target someone who was taking 5k bribe.

When you recruit people on the basis of some other nonsense criteria without merit and professional integrity this is where all it ends up. Top to bottom the entire system is rot. When these people are caught and once it's proved dismiss them from the jobs without service benefits like many multinational companies do for ethical violation of the code of conduct.

"Nothing happens without a bribe; if a paper needs to reach another table, you have to give a bribe. In every government office in Mangalore, if you want your work done quickly, you have to give a bribe. Otherwise, you will wait for years, nothing will happen, no one will listen to you, and no one will even look at you."
