Bengaluru, Jun 10: In connection with the passing away of renowned litterateur, theatre and cine actor and Jnanpith awardee, Dr Giri Karnad, the government has declared government holiday on Monday June 10 in his honour. The government offices, schools and colleges will remain closed today, said chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy.
Girish Karnad had always expressed the wish that no one should visit him to have his final glimpse and that his funeral should be performed without accompanied by any religious rituals. In honour of his wishes, the family members had clarified that there is no question of allowing the general public to pay their last respects to his mortal remains. It also said that they cannot accept government honour.
In response, Kumaraswamy said that the government, in honour of Karnad, will take similar initiatives it had undertaken in respect of other Jnanpith awardees in the past.
The ministry expansion scheduled for Wednesday too has been postponed, he clarified.
