Mangaluru, Jun 5: Police personnel of crime intelligence bureau (CIB), who launched an operation based on reliable inputs, arrested a person on the allegation of running a gambling racket in the form of world cup cricket betting. The accused, Keertitraj from the city, was taken into custody on Tuesday June 4.
The police confiscated seven lac rupees in cash, five cell phones and a laptop from the accused. The CIB police had collected information about the activities of the accused through reliable sources.
This happens to be the second cricket betting case in the city which the police have acted upon, after the world cup cricket tournament went under way.
The city police commissioner, Dr Sandeep Patil, had realized that a large scale betting racket relating to IPL and world cup cricket matches might be operating in the city. He had instructed the police to take tough measures to contain gambling activity. Accordingly the police had launched operations and confiscated lacs or rupees involved with betting during the IPL tournament.
The police commissioner had warned through his tweet immediately after the world cup cricket matches began, that those who get involved with betting would be dealt with sternly.
A case about the above activity stands registered in Kankanady police station.
