Mangaluru: Plummeting level in Thumbe dam - MCC likely to tighten water rationing

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 11: As water level at Thumbe dam has been coming down rapidly, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is seriously thinking of rationing the water supply even further.

This will be as against the current system of supplying water for four days and restricting it for two days thereafter. As per the new system, the period of suspension of supply would be extended to three days from the current two.

The water level at Thumbe, which stood at 4.24 metres on Thursday May 9, came down to 4.13 metres on Friday May 10. The drastic reduction in water level and absence of rainfall have been a cause of worry for the officials. The officials are aware that extending the period of suspension of water supply will aggravate the water situation in the city.

Even though pumping of water after two days of rationing began at Thumbe on May 9, water had not reached several areas even till Friday evening, some locals claimed.

It is said that the supply was hit after power supply snapped at 3 am last Sunday. The areas where the water did not reach are Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Bolar, Kodikal, Urwa Store, Nanthoor, Bikarnakatte, Shaktinagar, Bunder, among others. As many complaints were received from these areas, water was supplied through water tankers.

MCC should supply water every alternative day and not to stop water continuously for three days. It is ok with the people having large water storage tanks to store enough water for three days , but poor people having one day storage facility will definitely suffer for next two days without much water for their daily needs.

Our MCC has failed in all developments work. For water problems not done any home work, Footpath work going on since long long time and they have made that a mess. Next month when rain starts that time sea entering the coast side, water entering, for that also no preparation done. And every one talking about Smart City. It is very funny in Mangalore.

i think our people must realise atleast now that there are many more issues to fight for over religion caste etc,..
    1)ground water depletion is rampant
    2)deforestation
    3)no rain water harvesting
    4)no check on company effluents
    5)no check on pollution.
    6)unemployement
7)bad leaders, who dont bring any projects in support to society.
    8)sand mafia,land mafia.
without religion a man can survive, but without clean air, water and food i think its difficult..

MCC knows what are our current water resources & what is our annual water requirement. To bridge this gap we have many options like Desalination, Rainwater harvesting & Atmospheric water-generator ...
