Udupi, May 9: A wedding party entering the marriage hall to the beats of ‘Chende’ (cylindrical drum instrument) is a common trend today. However, an Udupi-based couple who made an entry into the wedding hall in Yakshagana style, accompanied by a troupe of Yakshagana artistes has become the talk of the town.
Shruthi and Chethan from Dendoorkatte chose to make a grand entry surrounded by a troupe of dancing Yakshagana artistes for their wedding which was scheduled to take place at Seshanayana hall on Wednesday May 8 here.
In a video that is going viral, the bride Shruthi is seen gracefully matching steps with the Yakshagana troupe, while the groom Chethan who is visibly shy prefers to walk next to his bride.
Having a touch of traditional culture in weddings seems to be a trend which is picking up lately. While the wedding party seems to have chosen Yakshagana style entry to promote the culture of the coast, it received severe backlash from Yakshagana patrons.
Many felt that Yakshagana is a respectable art and its dignity was being lowered by using it and its artistes to make entry for a wedding.
