Mangaluru: Police take action against fish transportation vehicles

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 7: The police have been receiving complaints about foul smell emanated by vehicles transporting fish and other problems created by them to the environment and road users. Many of the complaints were received during the department's weekly phone-in programme.

The department said that it has since studied guidelines prescribed by National Green Tribunal (southern zone) pertaining to Kerala on this issue. The department wants to strictly enforce these rules here and explained the rules to the participants of a meeting of fish transporters organized by the department.

Police notice was served on these transporters on May 6, asking them to strictly abide by the following rules:

1. Al fish carrying vehicles should be adequately insulated and made leak proof.

2. The fish should be transported in crates in order to prevent seepage of melted ice.

3. The water that spills and also melted ice from craters should be diverted and collected in waste water collection tanks of adequate size (like 50 liters capacity for vehicles carrying one tonne of fish) that are fitted to the vehicles exclusively for this purpose.

The city police commissioner has asked police personnel and other concerned departments to make sure that these rules are strictly enforced.

Instead of taking Disciplinary action against poor transporter, avoid unnecessary public nuisance from fish transport vehicle and wasting of police department time on keep on insisting and surveillance, we can plan for engineering control measure .. i.e. Design an appropriate vehicle which will be suitable for fish transportation, including the inbuilt water collection tank and freezer atmosphere in the tank. It should be in two types, Small and Large Transport vehicle which can be used for local and long transportation. This is the system what we follow for any hazardous chemical substances transportation system like LPG & Sulphuric Acid. Transporter should be aware about STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) and they should drain the collected fish water only into that unit which can be converted into Compost and distribute it to Poor former at low cost under the Prompt Government official surveillance.

Simple, make all vehicles transporting fish to write the numbers to call to complain regarding this issue. At the back and sides of all such vehicles there should be the number to call if the vehicle keeps spilling water. So, any passerby or one who follows such vehicles can call immediately the police without anyone knowing it.

There are many rikshaws, tempos, mini lorries and even bikes and cycles transport fish on our roads which results in slippery roads causing accidents mostly two wheelers. If the traffic police go to Bunder Dhakke side they will come to know how many of these vehicles transport fish without any proper protection. Such vehicles be booked so that they may not continue such habbits. Traffic police need to continue this checking almost daily.

Instead of doing all these, first put strict law & order on nuisance public transports in the city limits please. Don't spend time collecting Hafta from poor fish transport companies.
