Mangaluru, May 6: A team comprising of four officers, one sailor and two defence civilian employees from Indian Naval Ship (INS) Shivaji, visited St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) on May 4, under the leadership of commander V Seetharaman.

INS Shivaji is an Indian Naval station located in Lonavala, Maharashtra. It houses the Naval College of Engineering which trains officers of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It was commissioned on February 15, 1945 as HMIS Shivaji and later was renamed to INS Shivaji on 26th January 1950.

INS Shivaji is to celebrate 75 years of establishment in 2020 and to commemorate its Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, an event named “Steering to Shape the Future: Motorcar Expedition” is being conducted from March to May 2019. The team from INS Shivaji visited SJEC as a part of this Motorcar Expedition.

As a goodwill gesture, the crest was exchanged between INS Shivaji and SJEC, following which the team interacted with students. During the interaction, they highlighted the difference between Merchant Navy and Indian Navy. The team also briefed the students about different divisions in the Indian Navy and the selection process to get into them. The officers encouraged the students by appreciating their enthusiasm and willingness to join the Indian Armed Forces.
