Udupi: Residents urge administration to get government well cleaned

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS/HB)

Udupi, May 6: The public in the city is facing a hard time due to lack potable water. There is a huge government well near Janatha Vyayama School at Doddannagudde ward. There is enough water in the well. However, the water is not fit for consumption as it contains lots of worms.

The residents and Nagarika Samiti here have urged the administration to get the water of this well cleaned immediately, so that the public can make use of the water that is available in the well.

This well was built by the Grama Samiti in the year 1960. An inscription in this regard is available on the pillar of the well. The underground water level in this well is very good. That is why this well brims with water even during summer. Unfortunately, the water of the well cannot to be used for domestic purposes as it contains germs and dirt. Lots of thorns and bushes have grown on the inside wall of the well. The leaves of these plants fall in the water and get decomposed. Due to this and the presence of germs in the water, the colour of the water is changed completely and a bad odour surrounds the area. Since many years the silt deposited in the well is not cleaned. The locals say that some years ago, the locals themselves had cleared the silt from the well.

According to Nityananda Olakadu and Tharanath Mesta Shiroor, activists of Nagarika Samiti, the city administration has to drain out the present water from the well completely. The silt deposited in the well should be removed. The pest and plants that have grown on the inside of the well need to be removed. Also the branches of the trees that are bending towards the well need to be cut. If these works are carried out, the people of this locality can make good use of the water of this well even during summer.

The members of Nagarika Samiti opine that there are several government wells in the city which are in a similar state. If they are maintained well, the present water shortage situation can be managed properly.

People should do 'Kar Seva' and clean the well...than waiting for Municipality to do that...

After cleaning leave some 'Madonji', Mugud and 'Kijan' fish...to keep water clean...

Next time elect somebody who cleaned the well as your local Municipal member...not some 'Chumcha' of a political party...

    ...Tak...Takk...

How long we people call ourselves voiceless. I do know, people are facing great difficulties and living hand to mouth. But that is no where going to lead us.
The government officials or administration might have already got sanctioned the budget for cleaning government wells, but that is in books. In reality, they give damn to the needs of the people rather fake promise or eye wash sympathy.

As it is a emergency need and it is for the locals to find a generous good Samaritan for sponsor, to fund to clean the well and the locals to work along with the well cleaners, so that it won't burden additional money. After cleaning the well by the local people, I won't be surprised, the sanctioned money might the swallowed by the so called non corrupt.

This is what we are repeatedly saying but the authorities will never listen nor act.

There are so many wells and ponds which is being wasted now can be used.

Drainage system should be checked so that there is no leakages otherwise leakages from drain will spoil so many wells and will make unfit for use.

People are dying for water now and we see water is wasted like this.

We never realise the value of water until the well is dry.

This cleaning of wells either by the administration or by the residents should have been done much before the arrival of monsoon. At that time the water level would have been low and the cleaning process would have been much easier. Prevention is better than cure.

    good idea
for our house wells we clean it ourselves.
why not for this govt well ,villagers do it themselves
ultimately they use the water from it
for political rallies 1000 people gather - why not 10-20 youth from the village get to the job
water has no colour/no caste /no creed/no religion/ no politics
    why wait for the govt?
yes we can do it............at least for our future generations
