Kuwait, Apr 29: The newly formed sports committee of Shirva Welfare Association Kuwait (SWAK), hosted the first cricket tournament titled SWAK Cricket Trophy Season 1.
Twenty-four teams participated in scheduled league matches in five groups of the tournament which took place from March 24 till April 13. A total of 8 teams qualified from the league matches and entered the knockout round (quarterfinal & semifinal) to secure their place in grand finale which was played on April 26.
Red n Black vs MFC played the first quarter final, while team Boom Boom vs Scorpions; Brothers11 vs Alfa11 and Challengers vs Indian11 played the rest of the quarter finals in the morning session.
Semifinal one was played in the afternoon between Challengers and MFC and Semifinal 2 was played between Scorpions and Brothers11. Challengers won the first semifinal. The match took an exciting turn when the results of the 2nd semifinal between Scorpions and Brothers11 were tied. In the super over, Scorpions defeated Brothers11 and entered the finals.
In the final match Challengers won the toss and chose to field. Team Scorpions batting first scored 51 runs in the stipulated 6 overs.
Challengers chased the target in the 5.2 overs and won the finals and clinched SWAK Cricket Trophy 2019.
Shirva Welfare Association Kuwait (SWAK) committee had organised the entire event. During the presentation ceremony SWAK Cricket Trophy was handed over to winning team Challengers’ captain by guests Mario and Joylin Cornelio, while runners-up team award was handed over by Wasim Sheik.
SWAK president Alban D'Souza handed over the Man of the Series and Man of the Final Match award to Arif from Challengers. SWAK committee members felicitated the winners of various titles. Rayees from Scorpions was awarded the Best Batsman award and Best Bowler award was given to Sajid from Scorpions for their respective performances during the series. SWAK sports secretary Godwin Fernandes along with committee members conducted all the matched in a well-organised manner. The presentation ceremony was conducted by SWAK cultural secretary Lionel D'Souza. The programme came to an end with a thanksgiving note to all the sponsors who whole heartedly rendered their support to SWAK for the noble cause to help the needy and less fortunate back home in India.
