Mangaluru, Apr 1: District Congress observed ‘Black Day’ opposite Vijaya Bank branch at Mallikatte on Monday, April 1, condemning the merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda.

Addressing the protestors, former minister Ramanath Rai said, “Vijaya Bank has helped many people in the past. Now after the merger, the photo of bank founder Mulky Sundaram Shetty which is put up in the bank will be sidelined. This day will be observed as a ‘Black Day’ in the district. Mithun Rai has given assurance that if he becomes the MP, his first priority will be to save Vijaya Bank. Our district MP has never tried to stop the bank merger and did not do anything for the cause.”

Former MLA J R Lobo said, “BJP politicised Vijay Bank merger issue and gained political mileage out of it. They never worked for the interests of people. There are 7 MLAs and one MP in the district and it was their responsibility to stop Vijaya Bank’s merger with Bank of Baroda.”

Congress MP candidate Mithun Rai said, “Today is April Fool’s day. Our MP has tricked the people of the district. He always said that he has written letter addressing the concerned authorities, but never assured of preventing Vijaya Bank’s merger. We should take a pledge that if Congress comes to power, we will make sure that Vijay Bank’s name will be saved and this will be a continuous protest until justice is provided.”

Corporators Shashidhar Hegde, A C Vinayaraj, Sabitha Misquith, district women Congress president Shalet Pinto, Lavanya Ballal and others were present.

Like minded organisations also staged protest at Vijaya Bank head office in Jyothi. CPIM leader Sunil Kumar Bajal, Santhosh Kumar Bajal, activist M G Hegde and others were present.

Before 'Gujarat Model' was even evolved, our proud Karnataka is way ahead in Banking sectors. The state of Karnataka, particularly the region comprising the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, is called the cradle of banking in India. This is because seven of the country's leading banks, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, Vijaya Bank, Karnataka Bank, Vysya Bank and the State Bank of Mysore originated from this state. The first five in the above list of banks were established in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.
Perhaps all over the world Aril 1st, is marked as 'Fools Day'. But PM Modi's BJP government failed economic policies, Demonetisation after effect, loan wavier for crony capitalist to the BJP fundraisers fooled Tulu Nadu merging the 'Vijaya Bank' serving the nation for 88 years with loss-making banks of North India.

Vijaya Bank- Net profit rose 80.22% to Rs 143.38 crore in the quarter ended December 2018 as against Rs 79.56 crore during the previous quarter ended December 2017. Total Operating Income rose 22.75% to Rs 3848.44 crore in the quarter ended December 2018 as against Rs 3135.23 crore during the previous quarter ended December 2017.
Dena Bank- For the financial year 2017-18, the bank has posted a net loss of Rs 1,923.15 crore. In absolute terms, net NPAs stood at Rs 6,142.47 crore by the end of third quarter 2018-19 as against Rs 7,564.20 crore a year ago.

Bank of Baroda- The lender’s net loss stood at Rs 3,102 crore compared to a profit of Rs 154.72 crore a year ago. Provisions for bad loans surged nearly threefold to Rs 7,052.5 crore from Rs 2,425 crore a year ago.

Vijaya Bank was established by AB Shetty in 1931 touched the hearts of the people of the region by giving jobs and low-cost loans to locals. They continue to have strong social ties and memories with Vijaya Bank leading to protests over its loss of identity.

Thanks to Modiji & BJP, Shetty’s Vijaya Bank is 'No More' and now history.

BOB is 2nd largest nationalized bank after SBI. People are protesting against bank merger without knowing head and tail of mergers. What they are supposed to see? Vijaya Bank is picked up by no other bank? If this bank is left alone without merger, will it survive?

Langoolji, it's a really a sad day.. Even in damarskatte all are sad because of the merge of our favorite bank into some other bankrupt bank.. When we were small and studying simply trying to talk to the employees by asking them what is the time and exchanging some questions like this.. Now only one question why it is merged? Indeed very sad ..cant express. Though emoyees are sad too, they console the public 😢 We have only one bank here.

    Cynthi,

I agree with you, even in Belman , Vijaya Bank branch was first Bank in Belman opened in 1969...

I have fond memories about that branch, it was opposite Belman High School, where I studied...used to pass through it twice every day...

Merger's and acquisitions are common now a days...since Vijaya Bank was profit making bank, Bank Of Baroda could have merged with Vijaya Bank instead of Vijaya Bank merging with Bank of Baroda...

Now regarding these politician protesting...I don't believe they are sincere... this is their political stunt...I know most of these folks and their intention of protesting...

Mithun bhai, this is not going to work , '' If he becomes the MP, his first priority will be to save Vijaya Bank.'' Any primary class student knows this. The bank was nationalised perhaps 25-30 years ago. Its out of even the Ktaka CMS or even Central Fin Ministers hands. Forget Nalin. But note , Sir. if this is your election manifesto and these type of protests are your election strategy, you will really have to be a 'Disco Dancer' like Mithun Da.

Being a Cong supporter and an ex Vijay Bank employee, I feel sorry for young Mithun da. His election campaigning is heading for a disaster with only 2 weeks left. He has got a golden oppurtunity & he should not squander it. Its better he reaches out to people with a constructive agenda. Visit house to house. Meet and greet people personally in his constituency . Tell them what he has to offer . He needs to have a good strategist as he is/was a youth leader. Its better he surrounds himself with youth. Not these outdated bunch who have humiliatingly lost elections and sent home. Sorry to say , so far all Mithun da has done since he was selected is just hogging the lime light and being trolled. Apparently Mithun da is desperate seeking the lime light . Yes its a part of the game, but not with futile issues and surrounded by useless people. Reach out with something doable, forget Vijaya Bank , its a futile exercise. We all know why.

Customers will not feel and understand right now, but profit making banks share holders will bear the loss some time later for merging with loss making bank.
When Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Malya, Anil Ambani default bank payments, immediately, ignorant customer will not come to know the impact, but later taxation increases to recover the losses caused, rupee plunges against dollars, some enlightened people will understand.

This merger is making me insecure ,just think why only baroda.Baroda is in which state. They are smart people ,I dont have to say the rest, what will be the end result.Regarding citizenship in gulf ,they cannot give to any nationalities other emirati blood or half emirati,I guess its for national integrity or security reasons. And I have absolutely no problem.

I am not against Modi government just because I belong to minority .This government has axed us NRI community badly.Recently we asked for the 2BHK flat in mangalore.Only the GST comes upto 9lakhsINR.Am I crazy to invest when Emaar properties here in beachside downtowndubai is giving us affordable investment without such tax .

And along with this investment we will get 10years visa. His Highness is really great and generous.

Fatimaji...Are you still think emirates is much prosperous country than India. Only way of there income thru tourist sector and some oil fields. It's due to other nationalites who based in emirates turned desert land into wealthy land. It learned earlier even abu dhabi government lend money to dubai when needed. GST applicable to one and all. When nation is growing phase...everybody bound to contribute some or other way. Growth stopped from many years after congress ruling for last sixty years. We want to hurry and catch up with other countries in all spheres. We are already late. Today our's sacrifice will help next generation people and reap fruits. Infrastructure is happening all over. We are now fastest growing nation..and our economy is good. If you opt to purchase new flat ofcourse wants to pay GST. There are many old apartments available in good condition can go for it. Who is buying big flats...persons who are having money. It wont make any difference. Now a days people leaving gulf as local people given preference. How far you can continue on other land..??

Indirectly they are observing Black day for INDIRA GANDHIs forceful take over of banks which lead many mergers...when Indira Gandhi popularity nose downing, she had a plan, in the annual conference of the All India Congress Meeting decided to take over banks from the midnight of 19 July 1969. they are Allahabad Bank Bank of Baroda Bank of India Bank of Maharashtra Central Bank of India Canara Bank Dena Bank Indian Bank Indian Overseas Bank Punjab National Bank Syndicate Bank UCO Bank Union Bank United Bank of India...then once again in 1980, Punjab and Sind Bank Vijaya Bank Oriental Bank of India Corporate Bank Andhra Bank New Bank of India. Later on, in the year 1993, they merged New Bank of India with Punjab National ..few years back, associates banks merged with SBI, then Global trust bank merged with Oriental bank of commerce..i wonder , do these Congis have any knowledge of History..
