Mangaluru: Three girls drowning in swimming pool incident; owner detained, resort sealed

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 17: In connection with the tragic drowning of three young women in a swimming pool at a resort in Uchila, the police have taken VAZCO Beach Resort owner, Manohar Puthran, into custody for questioning. Allegations have surfaced that the incident occurred due to the resort's failure to adhere to regulations.

The Mangaluru sub-divisional officials have stated that the resort’s trade license and tourism permit have been suspended. It will remain sealed until the investigation is concluded, according to police reports.

The victims of the unfortunate incident are Nishitha M D (21), Parvathi S (20) and Keerthana N (21) from Mysuru.

The three friends had arrived in Mangaluru for a weekend getaway. After checking into a room at the resort near the beach earlier in the day, they entered the swimming pool for recreation. One of the women reportedly slipped into the six-foot-deep end of the pool, and the others drowned while trying to save her. An investigation into the incident is underway.

Ullal police rushed to the scene to conduct a preliminary inspection. Speaking about the incident, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal stated that none of the three knew how to swim, which led to their deaths. All three were engineering final-year students from Mysuru, and their families have been informed.

No help despite cries for assistance

The resort reportedly did not have a lifeguard on duty or any warning signs indicating the depth of the pool. The commissioner noted that although the victims shouted for help, no one came to their aid. The matter is under further investigation.

This incident reminded me of an encounter which took place in my fly long ago. Me and my brothers family were in Summers and Resort, with 4 small kids 3 -5 years. We the men were in the Bar and Kids with ladies around the swimming pool. Being temped with blue water my son 5 years jumped in the pool and got drowned but there were no Trainers nor lifeguards around. Luckily my late wife knew swimming and she dived and pulled our son out of the water. Today is is in Kuwait working as a Scuba diver and his Son 7 years is already a champion swimmer. All timing and God's grace. I tried to learn swimming in my cousin's place in the village but never pick even one step.

@ Sachidanand Shetty, Dubai/Mundkur Please do not bring God in our material things. God has given humans wisdom and also use our brains for exploring and developing scientific, economic, medical, space & technology for scientific research and development for human benefit. Safety & security measures are always should be at place, so that we are rest assured that things are going positively. There is a saying you do your best and depend on God for the rest. Never be an entitative thinker. For anything hope and attempt is first, winning or losing depends.

All have well commented -- --sad part for the owners who-- while have provided service of resort for people to enjoy possibly did not predict such a incident may happen -- Now surely, they have to shell out huge money 's as is the normal practice to get away - Police etc --- and restart -- --THERE IS A SUPREME COURT JUDGEMENT ON THIS -- Hotel Which Provides Swimming Pool Owes Its Guests A Duty Of Care; -- SC Directs KTDC To Pay Rs.62,50,000 To Family of the Victim

The arrest of the resort owner is unfair and he is being made a scapegoat. How many swimming pools in Mangalore will have have all safety standards in place. Prevention through proactive safety measures is better than senseless scapegoating by police dept.

its very strange that people from other district where there is no river or water games or swimming pools get excited by Kudla beaches and resorts , but it is common sense that people don't know swimming should not jump into water. safety comes later. safety for infants or blind. Its destiny of the three. Just imagine how painful for their parents . Everyone knows if you cannot swim then swimming pool is not for you. why blame the resort.

Sometime all kind of precautions or safety rules are in place..... But when the situation comes like this God has different action plan. Take the example of Fukushima Nuclear Accident in Japan few years back........ Japan is well known for safety measures in all respects..... but not only 2nd even 3rd stand by pumping water system failed to cool down the nuclear plant at one such point and time

A swimming pool for public use -- meaning even in resorts/ hotels etc -- it is not a home private pool- --a lifeguard most essential -- -- Or minimum protocols set -- signed register -- knowledge of swimming etc. -- life saving devices -- --simple water safety jackets or water safety tubes---- what has happened is extremely sad- -- age of students - with great future ---for parents lifelong suffering -- needless deaths -- --all one can say sadly RIP --

Whatever action taken by the authorities is justified and also for the owners to be able to run the facility must ensure that all prescriptions and safety rules are strictly implemented also followed. On the part of authorities, they need to check the ressort on a regular basis. In this incident the ladies involved were grown up and if they were not trained enough why they took for grated to play in the swimming pool ? Fun aside, life is moreimportant. Fun apart, precautions first.

The resort owner has taken the things lightly without making proper arrangements for the safety of people who go for swimming. So this tragedy happened. Better close the swimming pool

Why blame the owner, how many home stays in and around mangalore have all safety measures or lifeguards in place? In any of the numerous home stays or resorts I’ve been to in mangalore, I’ve never come across a “lifeguard” or “adequate” safety measures as “required” by these authorities. It’s easy for authorities to pin the blame on owner when they do not do due diligence when providing permits or licence. If owner is held accountable, the authorities who provided permit for the home stays too should also be held accountable. What if the girls were intoxicated at the time? Have any such investigations done? Will there be any lessons learnt from this incident? The police would never take extra burden on themselves when booking the owner and closing the resort/home stay is the easy option. Its well known fact that the police/authorities choose easiest way to close the case rather than pursue justice.

In every department there's one section to check . In schools, industries, hospitals, film theaters, market places, so many areas there's one inspector, Now here who's in charge of Resort checking inspector or regular inspections are there conducting ??. If it's coming under Police or Fire department, or MCC. Investigation must be done. There is negligence from one department. Better to find out.

The speed at which beach resorts are coming up in Kudla and Udupi districts is so alarming that all safety protocols are thrown out of the window. Focus is just on making money and rest everything is a farce. But i sincerely hope the district administration will get stricter measures in place to avoid such incidents going forward

The person running the resort should ensure all kinds of facilities, especially for the swimming pool. If there are ladies, there should be a female lifeguard, and for men and children, there should be male lifeguards. But due to a careless attitude, this was ignored. The lives that were lost cannot be brought back, but in the future, such resorts should be run with caution. Because accidents never announce themselves."

Please permanently suspend the license and put the owner behind bar for lifetime whose irresponsibility claimed the innocent lives . Also I am guessing same authority gave him license to run resort without checking the compliance and safety adherence. May be money power played the role. 6 Months ago a boy drowned in Kundapur Resort on the day of Eid. Even after such incidents authorities are not walking up?
