Kundapur, Jan 20: Shankar Poojary from Margoli Kalanje, in Basrur taluk, who was released after being arrested in Kuwait eight months ago for carrying banned substance in the tablets, reached Mumbai on Sunday, January 20.
Shankar who was arrested carrying the tablets in excessive quantity, was proved “not guilty” and released from jail on January 19. According to reports, he has reached Mumbai and from there he will be travelling to his native place via train. He is expected to reach Basrur on January 21.
Shankar's release was secured with the efforts of his wife Jyothi, Kuwait-based entrepreneur Pushparaj, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike district president Mohammed Ansar, Udupi district administration, Human Rights Protection Foundation, Billava Sangha Kuwait and Tulu Koota Kuwait.
Billawa Sangha Kuwait, Tulu Koota Kuwait and KKMA (Karnataka Wing) had collected donations from their members in Kuwait for the financial assistance needed in the case.
Shankar was working for a company in Kuwait. He had visited his hometown last year for ten days. When he was returning to Kuwait, at the request of one of his colleagues, he had agreed to carry a parcel handed over to him by a person from Udupi. The person had requested to deliver the parcel to the mother-in-law of the sender, who he claimed, had been working there.
Once Poojary landed in Kuwait, the officials found a parcel containing tablets in his possession. During his questioning, he told them that he had brought it for being delivered to a woman working in that country. But his colleague who was instrumental in sending the parcel through him told the police that he had nothing to do with the parcel. Shankar Poojary was detained and spent days in jail till he was released.
