Mangaluru Dec 25: DCP- Crime and traffic - Uma Prashanth urged the public to be alert as some chain snatchers are seen cheating people saying they are from CID and police department.

Two cases have been booked in Udupi related to chain snatching in which the culprits claimed that they are from CID and police department before committing the offence.

Speaking to Daijiworld, DCP Uma Prashanth said, "Today we received a message from Udupi police saying two men claiming to be from CID and police department are cheating people. They hypnotize the pedestrians saying there are chain snatchers and ask them to take off their valuables with the promise of security. This gang has been active and comes in a black vehicle,”

“We have been urging Mangaluru public to be alert on this issue and now the case has been reported at Bunder police station, where the accused have succeeded in diverting the mind of a 72 year old man named Bhagwan Das, from Alake, who lost a chain and two rings to a man who claimed to be CID police. Awareness is the key here. People should be alert,” she added.

“Police are there to give protection to people. We never ask to take off the valuables saying there are chain snatchers. Two men who speak in Hindi are trying to hypnotize people. If anyone comes across such things, it should be reported to police,” said Uma Prashanth.

    Dear K.G. class children,
I hope that by the time you are in the 2nd standard you will be able to read full sentences, so please ask your elders to save this so that you can read it and laugh and exclaim , “Really!?”.

Does your school provide you with an identity card which you hang about your neck, so that those who find/see you will know which school you attend, what your name is ,which standard you are in and whom to contact in case you are found?

Now , well, here is the funny part: policemen (and other government officials in India ,not just in the “uru” in which you live) do not have any type of identity cards to show!(yes, they do not even have a torchlight to search for you at night-time if you are lost!).

Yes! their school ( that means the office where they are supposed to study and do their work) does not issue them identity cards to hang about their necks( like those Infosys techies), so that other people may identify these officials and be sure who they are interacting with.

Yes, so there is no way you will know whether you have met a policeman or a kidnapper or a thief or a .....! Because none of the government officials feel they are obliged to identify themselves, in person or on the phone. Government officials behave in a high-handed manner and they expect that you must shudder and kow-tow to them when they come within your sights.

You see they believe they are beyond being questioned and that it is below their dignity to identify themselves to ordinary citizens or even to be polite and courteous. And, guess what, if you call their school to find out whether they are really who they claim they are, then there is a strong likelihood that nobody will help you. Do you find that strange? Well, I do too!

After reading this and after 30 years when you grow up and become head-master of the school(IPS or IAS ,if that “Dinosaurean” system still exists ),then maybe you may think of bringing some basic changes, like - making it compulsory for all government officials to clearly and conspicuously display their ID cards at all times and that they should never (except in very exceptional emergencies) enter into any private property without producing a letter authorising them to do so and which should be able to be cross-checked by the citizen before he/she complies with the request of the official or permits the official to enter upon private property.

Yes, haha, you are right! it does not take a rocket scientist to think of common-sensical solutions; even you at your age can think of it, haha, clever child! When you become “head-master”, I hope you do not forget how you and your elders suffered from the autocratic “burra-sahibs”(in the legislature, executive and judiciary) who do not believe that they are accountable to the common man and who treat the common man with disdain and subjugation.
