New Delhi, Dec 23: Invention since decades is on to find out the trace of water on the planet Mars. Though many times in the past it was found that the water is indeed available on the Mars, no evidence, justifying the same was available. However, this time around, it is confirmed that there is a huge water lake that is 82 kilometer (km) wide and 2 km deep on the surface of the planet.

European Space Agency has released this picture that is captured by the Mars Express. This lake is named as Korolev. The crater like lake is named after chief rocket engineer and spacecraft designer Sergei Korolev, who has been dubbed as the father of Soviet space technology.

This lake contains the slab of ice with the upper layer identified as Cold Trap. This means that the upper layer prevents the melting of the ice that is at the bottom due to the atmospheric heat. So this lake will be in ice form forever.

This is a vital invention by the Mars Express, which was let into the space in the year 2003. This invention of the Mars Express has opened many more avenues for the scientists who are continuously searching for sources of water on other planets.
