Kundapur: Illegal cow trafficking, police confiscate Scorpio vehicle

Kundapur, Dec 20: In a police raid during illegal transportation of cows, the accused fled from the spot. Police managed to confiscate the Scorpio vehicle in the raid. 

This incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 19 on NH 66 near here. 

Around 1.30 pm, a red coloured Scorpio was parked near Kubera Hotel on NH 66. When the Hoysala police vehicle was approaching the said Scorpio, the police noticed that a gang of six people were trying to push a calf inside the vehicle. When the police intercepted, all the six suspects escaped from the spot. 



Police found tarpaulin, knife, nylon rope, wooden planks, monkey caps, night trousers, T-shirts and two number plates bearing KA 03 MX 4233 registration number inside the vehicle. 

Kundapur police have registered a case in this regard.

    Each and every time when our police catch or chase the cow smugglers / thieves, they end up only confiscating the vehicle and not the thieves. Why it is so.... any idea Sirjee....!!!. Leave the vehicle and the cows but catch the thieves .

    Dear Chandra from Karla,
    You got it all wrong. The vehicle is confiscated and is deposited in the dump yard of police station. Owner obviously will take his own sweet time to approach the police. Whenever there is need for cheap autoparts, local mechanics approach the police station and purchase good parts including the heart of the vehicle, "the engine" and replace it with old ones. That is far more profitable than confiscate the cows (which (a) cannot be sold and has to be fed. (b) if sold illegally, may fetch ~Rs. 20k, but then has to declare that it was confiscated for evidence during future proceedings, and the thieves (who will anyway be released by the influential).
    Therefore, in all of the exercise, let go the cows, let go the thieves and confiscate the vehicle....focus on the prize!!!

    In Karnataka, cows can be slaughtered if old or diseased. Possession, however, is not a crime. According to a bill proposed by the BJP in 2010, cow slaughter made slaughter punishable by 7 years’ jail and Rs 1 lac fine. THIS BILL IS STILL PENDING FOR APPROVAL IN KARNATAKA ASSEMBLY.
