Udupi, Dec 19: Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) assistant executive engineer, Ramakrishnayya, informed that tender process for two phases of the plan to supply water to the city and nearby villages by bringing water of River Varahi from Bharatkal near Halady through a 38-km long pipeline, has been completed. He said that tender process for the third process is now in progress.
KUIDFC is executing this project. Ramakrishnayya gave this information at a public meeting held at Ammani Ramanna Shetty Hall here for the residents of wards within the city municipality wards.
The official explained that the total project cost involved is Rs 300 crore. Out of this, first phase works would cost Rs 119.5 crore. The second phase work with Asian Development Bank funding, will be implemented at a cost of Rs 112 crore. The third phase of Rs 65.5 crore involves setting up of purification unit and other works, which would be undertaken by the state government, he stated.
Municipal councillor, Srikrishna Rao Kodancha, noted that it might take three years to start getting water from Varahi River. He pointed out that the city reels under water shortage since February onward every year. He urged the concerned to undertake dredging work at Baje Dam and repair the wells within the city to manage water situation during these 36 months.
Municipal councillors, Vijaya Poojary representing Badagabettu ward, Raju of Kasturba Nagar and Chandrashekhar Sherigar were present.
