Mangalore, Oct 30: After a cancer patient named Timmaiah Gowda (55) from Kalasapur in Chikmagalur district succumbed to the disease at the district Wenlock Hospital in the city on Wednesday October 29, his relatives and Sriram Sene activists gave vent to their anger at the alleged insensitive approach owned by the hospital administration in treating him.
Gowda had been admitted to the hospital on October 8, as per the advice of Kidwai Cancer Hospital Bangalore. Surgery was conducted on him for the removal of cancer tumour at the hospital on October 14 and he was discharged thereafter.
After his condition worsened three days ago, he was admitted again into the intensive care unit of the hospital. Gowda also suffered from diabetes. Two minor surgeries were conducted on him again, to remove the pus that had formed at the sutured portion and again, after infection was noticed. District surgeon Dr Prabhudev said that the patient died as the pus had entered the blood stream.
The family members were shocked when the hospital authorities declared Gowda dead at around 4 pm on Wednesday. Sriram Sene activists later thronged the hospital to protest against the alleged ill-treatment of the patient. They said that the patient had died in the morning, but the hospital doctors concealed this fact and the family members were not allowed inside. They alleged that the medical students used the body for experiments. The protestors also alleged that kidneys of Gowda had been removed.
Pandeshwar police station inspector Tilakchandra along with other personnel came on the scene and pacified the protestors. Prabhudev said that he was prepared to arrange for the post-mortem examination of the body in the presence of any person or persons of the protestors' choice or in any other hospital as they might suggest, to find out if any lapses had occurred. He said he was prepared to conduct the scanning of the body to ensure the presence of kidneys in the body.
Later, the family members relented and agreed to claim the body of the patient. The deceased is survived by two sons and a daughter.
