Chikkamagaluru, Sep 16: In an incident reported from Niluvagilu village in Koppa taluk in the district on Saturday September 15, 17 students of a school fell ill after consuming hot milk supplied at the school. As the children got timely treament, they escaped from suffering serious consequences of the blunder committed by cooking staff of the school, reports said.
17 students of the government higher primary school at Niluvagilu near Hariharapura in the taluk and physical education teacher of the school, Mohan Gowda, became nauseous and began to throw up immediately after drinking milk at school. As the children and a teacher fell ill en masse, they were provided treatment in the hospitals at Hariharapura and Koppa.
It is said that the cooking staff, instead of adding sugar to milk at 11 am, used urea which is used as fertilizer for crops instead. A case about the incident was registered in Hariharapura police station. The police have taken into custody cooking assistants of the school, Yashoda, Sharada and Gulabi for questioning. The students and the teacher returned to good health by late evening after which they went home with family members.
Koppa MLA, T D Raje Gowda, former MLA, D N Jeevaraj, zilla panchayat president, Sujata Krishnappa, zilla panchayat member, S N Ramaswamy, tahsildar, Tanuja Saudatti and others visited the hospitals after coming to know of the incident and instilled confidence in the students. MLA, Raje Gowda, blamed the cooking staff and teachers of the school for showing irresponsibility and giving rise to this incident. He said he has asked police to take stern steps against the erring persons.
