Madrid, Oct 21: Fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles' title hopes were dashed by seventh-seeded Poles Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg and the Indo-Bahamian duo ended up being runners-up in the Madrid ATP Masters.
Bhupathi and Knowles went down 4-6, 2-6 Matkowski and Fyrstenberg, who won their second ATP title of the season.
It is the first ATP Masters Series title for the Poles, who finished runners-up to Bob and Mike Bryan in the Madrid final last season.
One break in the ninth game was sufficient to seal the opening set for Matkowski and Fyrstenberg and they quickly built on their advantage, breaking to lead 2-0 in the second set.
Bhupahti and Knowles pegged them back briefly by levelling 2-2, but Matkowski and Fyrstenberg went on to break serve twice more in the fifth and seventh games to secure victory after one hour.
