Mangaluru, Aug 21: To spread the rich tradition of Tulunadu among youth ‘Aatid Onji Dina’ was celebrated at St Agnes College. The chief guest of the programme was Dr Jayanth, retired Chemistry professor of St Agnes College.
Tulunadu is a region where you can discover a plethora of cultural variations and one of them is the month of Aati. Aati is considered to be a culturally significant month. Farming has always been the prime occupation of Tuluvas but during the month of Aati because of heavy rains farmers used to take a break and indulge in cultural activities. Because of rains, there was always a chance of falling ill, so during this month the meals were prepared from leafy vegetables, medicinal herbs which are healthy. The local plants helped to heal the body, provide nutrition and increase immunity. The reason for celebrating ‘Aatid Onji Dina’ is to keep the traditional Tulunadu culture alive.
Dr Jayanth in his speech spoke about what Aati is and the scientific reason for its celebration. He also mentioned the importance of shelter, food, fire and air and that one should follow the culture of Tulunadu. Principal Sr Dr M Jeswina AC expressed her feelings about Aati. The energy of the program saw a leap with the folk dance performed by the NSS volunteers. The programme concluded by singing NSS anthem.
After the programme delicious homemade cuisine like Mango Chutney, Tonjok, Yettida Podi, Pathrode, Timareda Chutney, Arepda pundi, Kudutha chutney, Etti Chutney, Thimare, Mango pickle, Neerdosa, Kudu Unde and many more were served to the gathering which were brought by the NSS volunteers.
