Mohali: Sachin Tendulkar Breaks Lara's Record

TOI

Mohali, Oct 17:
Sachin Tendulkar became the highest scorer in Test cricket after surpassing West Indian legend Brian Lara in the ongoing second Test in Mohali on Friday.

The Master Blaster needed just 15 runs today to overtake Lara's Test match tally of 11,953 runs and establishing a fourth world record in his illustrious career.

Tendulkar is also on the verge of creating another landmark as he will also be the first player to amass 12000 runs in Test cricket.

The 35-year-old batting maestro is already the world's top-scorer in One-Day International (16,361) and has the most centuries in Test matches (39) and One-dayers (42).

The Mumbaikar came close to surpass Lara's milestone in the drawn first Test in Bangalore but he fell short of just 15 runs after playing a gritty knock of 49 runs in the second innings to help India seal a draw.

Sachin made his Test debut at the tender age of 16 against Pakistan in 1989 in Karachi. From there on the little master of world cricket has never looked back.

The Mumbaikar came into limelight with his first Test century on a seaming Old Trafford track against a formidable English attack as he saved the match for India.

Tendulkar still remains the most admired cricketer from all quarters the world ranging from experts to cricket ardent fans despite not being in his best of form off late.

The body of the master blaster has taken its toll as he has been playing international cricket to close to two decades. Though several injuries marred his playing career time and again during the last five years but his never-say-die attitude still makes him the heartthrob of cricketing world.

I don’t want to repeat what Thomas and Roland have already stated in their comments. What I have to say is that I’d have had much more regard for Tendulkar had he announced his retirement soon after genuine fast bowlers of the likes of McGrath and Lee regularly succeeded in getting the better of him at an early stage of his innings. Geoff Boycott correctly opines that overtaking a batsman in aggregate runs does not make one a better batsman. To back his opinion, he states how his overtaking Sir Garfield Sobers’ record did not make him a better player than Sobers. Indeed, they had a contrasting approach to batting -while Sobers excelled at aggression, Boycott was great at defence.

In fact, leaving aside Sir Donald Bradman, Sobers is probably the best batsman the world has ever seen. His record of an unbeaten 365 remained for nearly 4 decades. Besides, he is definitely the best all-rounder of all times. I consider myself lucky to have seen him in person and watch him play test cricket. I could not tell how and when he took a catch. So swift and disguised were his movements - absolutely graceful, and I never saw him dive even once ! Commentaries on Sobers, the cricketer and the Man, and so forth are breath-taking.

Thomas, well said. Sachin's statement of "I dont want anyone to tell me when to retire" shows the arrogance of a person. Its high time that the public realises that cricket is a team game and not a platform for an individual to break records, at the cost of the team. I hope we get to see more Sachin's who play for India, rather than the present Sachin who only plays for his glory.

When Sachin went to Srilanka, he needed just 172 runs to break Lara's record but he took 5 matches to reach the milestone. Now the ors have to think if this performance is enough for him to continue playing for India. When he gets 50 or 100, everyone just forgets his poor form and wants him to play for few more years. Indian cricket needs consistency, not 1 or 2 match wonder nor the past performance. Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly & Laxman are just spent forces they just can't play like they played in the past. It is either for themselves to step down gracefully or for the ors to remove them. India will see new Sachins, Dravids & Gangulis once these oldies are out of the team.

Roshan & Dolfy are notin but loosers who only think negative in life. This reminds me of what the master blaster said after the days play "People sometimes throw stones and you convert them into milestones"... We are here to celebrate this milestone with the whole nation and we are proud that we have a Indian rite there on the top with most number of runs...Cheers!!!!

Well done Sachin. |Congratulations. You kept India's flag high and I hope & pray you always do it whenever you are in nthe crease be it batting or bowling or fielding. For some negaitve remarks on Sachin and Sachin replied beatifully, saying there were some stones thrown at me and still are, but I consider them and turn them as milestones. But win many games for India. God bless you.

Congratulations Sachin....You are genious...ofcourse...this took long time to achieve...but it is very easy to make cheap comments..but your contribution to cricket is great, especially being Indian. If you will criticise Sachin infront of cricket loving Pakistanis they straight away say NO, even they like his cricket play very much... Being an Indian be proud of Sachin...

Dolfy and Roshan, Even if Sachin plays for the record, what is your problem? All time great Don Bradman has acknowledged the talent of Sachin. Who are we to give such negative comments on such a genius? It is not only the scores of Sachin, but his presence is sufficient for other players to give their best. This has been acknowledged by most of the Indian players.

I have switched off the TV so many times after the fall of the wicket of Sachin. I am sure there were countless others who have done so. It is a treat to watch his game. For me he has never been boring when he is in the field. I only wish, he had scored another 12 runs today to make the day still more memorable. Anyway, best of luck for the coming matches.
