Mangaluru, Jul 24: The NSS unit of A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, a constituent college of Nitte deemed to be university, Deralakatte, here in association with Hejamady gram panchayat and Gandhi Nagar Yuka/Yuvathi Vrinda conducted Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme 2018 from July 2 to 21 at Hejamady Kodi village. The team comprised of 15 young doctors (interns) of ABSMIDS headed by NSS co-ordinator Dr Kumuda Rao and Dr Avaneendra Talwar.
The programmes conducted were Swachh Bharat programmes in various areas like panchayat premises public areas, schools, beaches, door to door campaigning to create awareness regarding personal health, segregation and disposal of waste. Street plays were conducted in public areas and schools for creating awareness regarding ill effects of tobacco and other habits, spread of malaria, tuberculosis, oral pre-cancer and oral cancer, demonstration of hand washing technique and brushing techniques. Dental treatment camps were also organized in schools and for the general public along with oral cancer and pre-cancerous screening.
The young doctors (interns) also underwent a training workshop in handloom weaving, carpentry, pottery, cane furniture at Pulikula artisan village and Kaavi Art at Nitte Institute of Architecture. This was later propagated as environment friendly and as small scale industry development. Kaavi art was painted on the walls of Panchayat and Hejamady Primary School.
The inaugural function was held at Hejamady Yuka/Yuvathi Vrinda hall, Hejamady Kodi on July 2. The programme was inaugurated by chief guest Prof Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary. vice chancellor, Nitte deemed to be university and guest of honour Lalaji R Mendon, MLA, Kapu constituency, Vishalakshi U Puthran, Sudhakar Karkera, Mamatha Y Shetty, Prof (Dr) Sumalatha Shetty were also present on the occasion.
The valedictory ceremony was held on July 21. Prof (Dr) U S Krishna Nayak, principal and dean, ABSMIDS was the chief guest, Prof (Dr) Mahabalesh Shetty K was the guest of honour.
