Mangaluru, Apr 11: Traditional ghumat percussion instrument training workshop was organized by Konkani Sangh of Milagres College in association with Mangalore University Adhyana Peeta at College Auditorium on April 7.
The programme was inaugurated with lighting the lamp. Fr Michael L Santhumayor, principal, Milagres College, Dr Jayavanth Nayak, convener, Konkani Adhyayana Peeta, Mangalore University, Dr Aravindh Shanbhog, convener, post-graduation department Konkani , Mangalore University, and Dr Devdas Pai, registrar, Konkani Sahithya Academy were present on the dais. Prem Moras, coordinator, Konkani Sangh, Milagres College, welcomed the gathering.
Dr Jayavanth Nayak explained the importance of traditional instruments and Konkani literature and he also told the students to involve themselves to learn traditional music. Fr Michael L Santhumayor told that Ghumat training will be included as a add-on courses for the next academic year.
Ghumat artists Victor Saldanha, Maxim Saldanha, Walter D’Souza trained students about ghumat instrument and songs. The students exhibited their talents through traditional songs and dance. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Lavita Pereira, assistant coordinator, Konkani Sangh, Milagres College.
