Mangaluru: DGGI regional unit recovers over Rs 50 crore of evaded tax

Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 2: The regional unit of Directorate General of Goods & Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI), the apex intelligence agency under the Central Board of Indirect Tax & Customs (CBIC), functioning in the city, has performed exceptionally well in the year 2017-18.

The Mangaluru regional unit, which started functioning about three years ago, has detected Central Excise and Service Tax evasion cases of more than Rs 75 crore during the year 2017-18 and has recovered more than Rs 50 crore of the evaded tax. DGGI is the enforcement arm of Central Board of Indirect Tax & Customs that focuses on the anti-evasion work of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The percentage of recovery of Central Excise duty and Service tax in relation to detection is 68%. According to a press release from DGGI, the evaders had adopted various methods to evade payment of tax. However, on detection and being confronted with evidence collected by DGGI Officers of Mangaluru regional unit, many of them have come forward and paid their tax dues.

Further, on the basis of information provided by the Mangaluru regional unit of DGGI, the Hyderabad zonal unit of DGGI arrested two Hyderabad based businessmen for evading service tax of more than Rs 6 crore.

The high compliance level among the defaulters is due to the awareness campaign carried out by the unit. The regional unit was able to get information from public on tax defaulters.

DGGI once again appeals to the public to come forward and report any instances of Service Tax/Central Excise/GST evasion. The informers who provide credible information resulting in detection of tax evasion will be suitably rewarded up to 20% of the tax evaded as per the government guidelines in force.

What about hotels and restaurants they do not provide guests with a bill and who knows what tax they are paying ? Even if anyone orders a parcel from any restaurant there is a small slip given to the customer without any mention of SGST and CGST. After the central Govt. fooled us now its the turn of business establishments to fool the public.
