Udupi, Mar 27: A youth attempted suicide after he was allegedly tortured by the Manipal police who had called him to the police station for enquiry over a matter.

Rakesh Kumar (23), a DJ residing in Udyavar, has been admitted in a hospital in Manipal after he tried to slit his wrists.

On Sunday March 25, Rakesh and his friend Rahul Poojary were riding towards Manipal. When they reached Ishwarnagar, a car driven by a person identified as Chandrakant came in the way all of a sudden. An irked Rakesh alighted from his bike and confronted Chandrakant. A heated exchange of words ensued.

Rakesh in his statement claimed that Chandrakant got personal and hurled abuses directed against his father. An enraged Rakesh allegedly hit Chandrakant and even picked up a heavy stone, threatening to hurl it at Chandrakant. The others who were at the spot intervened and pacified the two. No injuries were reported.

CCTV footage of the incident shows Rakesh picking up the stone.

Chandrakant, who is a lecturer at a college, later filed a complaint in Manipal police station, after which Rakesh was summoned for enquiry. Rakesh has alleged that in the police station, he was tortured and abused by the policemen on duty. "The police tortured me and used abusive language against my mother," Rakesh alleged.

Hurt by the alleged insults, Rakesh went to Wind Point near Mannu Palla lake in Manipal and attempted suicide by slitting his wrist with glass splinters.

A badly injured Rakesh was rushed to hospital where he has been admitted in the ICU.

Sources said that Rakesh's family has complained to the SP who has assured to take action in the matter.

Attempts to reach Manipal police for a statement went unanswered.

Most of the policemen they don't know how to act and react with public. I request SP to take serious action with those policemen who don't know how to act and react with public. 0% tolerance for using abusive words and taking action without proper conclusion. Policemen are the ones to save the country and serve the people and not create and miscreants in the society. Senior officers are the ones to decide in taking action.

Whatever profession is of Chandrakant, he is right to have gone to the police because its Rakesh who lost his temper in the first place. If Chandrakant had not brought it to the knowledge of the authorities, Rakesh would have continued with his arrogance and more episodes like this could have taken place even reached to extreme results.

What I ask is, why the police had to get into abusing Rakesh and his parents ? Don't the get training to counsel disputing individuals ? Why the government is wasting money in training the police ? Do your job to reduce legal hassles, do the job for which you are paid our of public's contribution.

And, Rakesh must repent even more. If he was patient when the car came ahead of him, all this would not have happened.

height of intolerance, I have faced the same situation, the present youths are so intolerant they have forgotten the forgiving attitude, mistakes can happen with anybody, just smile and let them go.

I was watching a sermon on FB by a swami ji in toronto and he was giving the same example when somebody des some inconvenience to us knowingly or unknowingly, just smile at them or remind them without looking at their attitude towards us, that's is positive energy rather wasting our all energy in arguments and fight. if Rakesh has given a smile with thumbs up to the driver chandrakanth who is going in a car with family the situation would have been different. if somebody says something bad about us dont react, that means you have ignored him , the moment you react you are acceoting it and wasting your energy and we dont know where we end may be in ICU or in the grave yard.

In "Our Father" we are taught to Pray "Lead us not into temptation"
A New York boy used to pray "Lead us not into Penn Station (US jail)
In India, in addition to "Our Father", we have to pray "Lead us not into Police station".

Some people respect their parents more than their religion. When there is a law to punish for hurting the religious feelings, why can't we enact a law for hurting the feelings by insulting family members with tougher punishment? Police using torture and abuse must lose his job. A change in police department policies to this effect must be included in upcoming election manifesto. I will vote for this irrespective of my political affiliation to party.

Sad things turned out quite bad for the victim.Hope he regains and recover from this and able to put things right. It is important.Police have no right to aabuse a victim and his parents in any way. They have the duty only to take up the case ,file ,ask and notedown,investigate..Nothing more.He should have filed a case against police officer ,but not suecide. It makes still him as culprit.wish him good health.
