Mangaluru, Mar 27: Chief whip of the legislative council of Karnataka, Ivan D'Souza, announced that the entire grant of Rs 175 crore provided in the state budget for 2017-18 to Karnataka Christian Development Council has been fully and judiciously utilized for the development of Christians.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Monday March 26, he said that out of the said grant, Rs 150 crore was used for repair of churches, construction of community halls and old-age homes. Balance Rs 25 crore was spent for distribution of student scholarships, and for things like Shrama Shakthi, self employment and other schemes through Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation.
"At the meetings held on February 22 and 28, 2018, Rs 1.67 crore was released for church repairs, Rs 12.17 crore for development of cemeteries, and Rs 1.11 crore for old-age homes in Dakshina Kannada district. A total of Rs 15.95 crore has been spent in Dakshina Kannada district while Rs 11.35 crore was released to Udupi district for similar activities, he narrated. He also revealed that Rs 800 crore had been released in 2017-18 for the development o colonies for minorities.
On this occasion, he distributed cheques issued from Chief Minister's Relief Fund to 17 persons suffering from different ailments as per Ivan's recommendations.
