Kasargod, Mar 25: In a tragic incident, a young girl died after her churidar shawl got stuck in the wheel of the bike she was riding pillion. The incident took place at Kinanoor-Karindala area here on Sunday March 25.

The deceased has been identified as Maria (12), daughter of Saji and Bindu, residents of Birikulam.

It is learnt that on the occasion of Palm Sunday, the parents and their daughter were riding by bike to Birikulam church when the accident occured.

Maria was sitting on the bike between her father and mother. All of a sudden, the shawl of her churidar got under the wheel of the bike, throwing her on to the road. A critically injured Maria was rushed to hospital, where she breathed her last.

Maria was a student of seventh standard at Parappa government higher secondary school.

The post-mortem was conducted in the district hospital and the body was handed over to the bereaved family.

Neeleshwar police have registered a case.

Very sad .May her soul rest in Jesus hand in peace.Parents had no chance to show their affection and love for long.Heartfelt sympathy to them.Let us learn atleast,now as rider and pillion rider to take care to wear their shawl not allowing in air to wehen,but to put around the neck doubled like a tie.may be in future so accidents can be avoided.RIP.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family. May the departed girl angel rest in peace.

All parents, guardians make it a point that their young girls or whoever travel on two wheelers
wear suitable clothes while on road. We have no control over the weather and the speed when
we are in the open. For any such happening we shall never be able to forget the incident

My search for policies for two-wheeler rider requirement in India lead me to a research article by Brooks et al. (2014) in the Journal of Ergonomics. Interestingly the research study has its origin in Clemson University in South Carolina, USA which highlights rider/s safety taking into consideration our cultural attire (saree). Riders of two-wheeler need to realize that safety is paramount when practicing our cultural attire specially when it involves occupational and driving safety. I have attached the links for the research article. Class rooms are great opportunities to increase the rider safety and hazards where young minds pay better attention. The law makers must introduce a bill curbing under age child riders on two-wheeler if there is not one and name it Maria’s law in honor of the diseased.

There should be dress code for 2 wheel riders. So many accidents happens due to saree pallu, shawls, etc.

Absolutely. For safety reasons, a proper attire must be approved. Even Sarees are not considered safe for bike ride. Always there is a risk of entanglement with the wheels.

My Heart goes out to the family, neighbors, class mates and the teachers of this child, what a loss of a precious life, may her soul RIP.

Let alone the dress code, sandwiching children between riders on two wheelers is nothing short of endangering the lives of children and should be banned. We have a long way to go before catching up to a culture of safety in our lives. A callous disrespect for safety is rampant in our society. We have a responsibility for the lives that depend on us and around us. For those who defy common sense in the litigious western world, safety instructions are provided from toasters to electric irons by the manufacturers. I am not sure what works for us back home.
