Mangaluru, Mar 13: Alva's Institute of Engineering and Technology on Monday March 12 organized International Women's day - 2018 on the theme ‘Press for Progress’ at Alva's Institute of Engineering and Technology, here.

The event started with invocation and was inaugurated by four women achievers managing director and trustee K Pandyarajah Ballal Institution Dr Priya Ballal, founder director Ave Maria Palliative Care Dr Lavina M Noronha, CEO Manjunath Tyresole Treads, Lakshmi Roa and wwner of Halli Mane Shilpa.

All the four women achievers were felicitated on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, principal AIET Dr Peter Fernandes said, “We are honoured to have these four women achievers who strived hard to reach to this position and inspired many. If a lady is educated, then the whole family and society will be educated. Mother is a creation of God which cannot be replaced as her care, love is enormous. Mother is the only one who can understand the language of an infant, but once the child grows it starts questioning the mother about how well the mother can understand him/her. As days passed by, technology has advanced and thoughts and mindset have changed but the family bond will never change. Girls need to build courage and never be dependent on anyone. They should defend themselves as they are mentally stronger than men.”

Managing director and trustee K Pandyarajah Ballal Institution Dr Priya Ballal said, “Women always want to stay young for which more importantly health should be maintained. Usually health problem starts at the age of 20. Youth are more adventurous as they are involved in substance abuse and spoil their health. Youngsters need to come out of this as it causes mental imbalance and will be a problem for the next generation.”

She even spoke about pregnancy, protecting unwanted pregnancy, menstrual problems and periods.

Dr Lavina M Noronha said, “Women use their body, mind and spirit to know and understand the world. A mother is always forward in taking decisions as she does not care about herself and wants others to feel good. Women not only feel the pain but even respond to it and their love is unconditional. We have to change our mindset towards women and only then will there be progress. A woman has good as well as bad days in her life and struggles. She has been a victim of female foeticide who is also a woman. She has been socially labelled as helpless and valued more on appearance rather than by her achievements. She is pressurized to learn gender stereotype and as a grownup she is expected to be dependent. The crime against women keeps on increasing. They are made to feel insecure in society. She has been the victim of domestic violence. Women need to be empowered and this starts from the family.”

Lakshmi Roa and owner of Halli Mane Shilpa also spoke on the occasion.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of poster making competition on the theme ‘Press for Progress’.

Sana compered the programme, event coordinator Dr Claret Mendonca welcomed the gathering and Saakshi rendered the vote of thanks.
