Udupi, Mar 12: Namma Angadi, the annual event hosted by School of Communication in association with the Concerned for Working Children (CWC) Kundapur, conducted its third and final day's event on Sunday March 11. The event, which focuses on supporting working children and struggling local artisans, took place at the School of Communication, near Udayavani building.
The event saw a large footfall, with customers coming from as far as Bihar. The crowd favourites were the Tribal Bansuris, a tribal instrument that creates pleasant notes when swung around. The fast moving products included soaps, essential oils, material, saris, men’s and women’s apparel, décor items, handicrafts, jewellery, accessories, tribal instruments and locally made eatables.
A positive feedback was received about the event. Bob Shoemaker, a retired US attorney said, “I have lived in Manipal for two years. We have been to this event previously and my wife and I loved it. This year’s event is fantastic. The students from School of Communication are extremely helpful. I picked up some products that I need for home use. My wife liked the saris and the cotton material. The quality of the products, especially the organic ones, is exceptional. We will be taking them back to America.”
T Shivanand Shetty, assistant director, CWC, Namma Bhoomi, was pleased with the overall event. “The event was well organized and the student teams worked well together for the event. I got a lot of feedback from the customers who told me that students conversed with the customers and treated them very well.”
Shivamoorthi, assistant director, CWC, Namma Bhoomi, said the event help to communicate to customers about the artisans and their products. “Namma Angadi is a great platform for the artisans and customers to meet. Artisans are able to get the exposure they need through the event, while customers can get access to locally produced handmade products.”
Dr Padma Rani, director, School of Communication, Manipal, says that Namma Angadi is a multi-dimensional event. “As an event, Namma Angadi helps to meet different goals. As an academic exercise, the post-graduate students get to understand the practicality of organising and managing an event. For the artisans at CWC, Namma Bhoomi, they get exposure to the cosmopolitan world and understand how to promote the cause and their products. Also, they learn the important aspect of how to communicate with customers to make a sale,” she explained.
